Join me on the road to emotion regulation, distress tolerance, relationship effectiveness, and living in the present moment. I look forward to getting to know you and accompanying you on your journey as we collaboratively set goals together and use skills to get there.
An individual psychotherapy session is usually face-to-face and takes place at my office either in Sea Point or Tableview. The session lasts for a psychological hour. The introductory session is the same length and cost as the standard psychotherapy session.
Online pscyhotherapy, or teletherapy, is provided via a secure platform (Zoom) so you are able to participate in sessions wherever you may be. There is substantial evidence for telemedicine interventions in patients with mental disorders (Bashur et al, 2016).
Join a dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) skills group that takes place every Monday evening from 18h00 to 20h00. Do you experience very intense and erratic emotions? Perhaps you are impulsive or self-harm? If so, this group could be for you.
A voluntary admission to a hospital or clinic is sometimes one of the best decisions you can make for your own mental health. I will support you when you are admitted and will endeavour to see you at least three times a week during your admission, even on Sundays when there is usually not much clinic activity.
My home clinics are Palm Tree Clinic and West Beach Clinics in Milnerton.
Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy that has proven effective for the treatment of a wide array of psychological problems. It utilises the information processing system and natural adaptive mechanisms of the brain to help you deal with (a) stressful memories and (b) the persistent negative effects of disturbing experiences (eg. the effects of abuse, trauma, violent crimes, etc).
Brain working recursive therapy (BWRT) is an innovative new concept of psychotherapy, completely unlike anything that has gone before it. Imagine a therapy system which within just a few sessions could banish the most terrifying of phobias. The method works by reprogramming your brain’s automatic reactions to distressing triggers or behaviours.
Rene Descartes, the 17th century philosopher claimed that your mind and your body were not connected. In other words, your mental health and physical health used to be thought of as two different things. Today, we know that this is not true. We know, for example, that when your immune system is compromised, you may experience depression, fatigue, anxiety and even schizophrenia (Vasile, 2020). With the lates research, we now know that the way you think and the way you feel cannot be ignored; in fact, it is fundamental to a fulfilled an effective life. Therefore, prioritising your mental health is, in effect, about looking after your complete health. And what could be more important than that?
Borderline personality disorder is a severe mental health condition characterized by intense mood swings, unstable relationships, impulsive behavior, and a high risk of suicide. Although borderline personality disorder is typically diagnosed in adulthood, symptoms often emerge during adolescence.
Emotion dysregulation is the inability to use healthy strategies to diffuse or moderate negative emotions. Being able to regulate emotions is a skill, meaning that people often learn emotional regulation as they grow up. Some people may find it easier than others to regulate their emotions. Effective emotion regulation has been linked to a range of positive outcomes, including improved well-being, better interpersonal relationships, and enhanced resilience in the face of stress and adversity.
Mysophobia is a type of phobia based on an intense and illogical dread of dirt, germs, or contamination. It is reasonable and wise to be concerned about things like food cross-contamination, coming into contact with other people’s bodily fluids, and practising excellent hygiene. But if you suffer from mysophobia, these common worries become exaggerated and interfere with day-to-day activities.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is designed to help people who suffer repeated bouts of depression and chronic unhappiness. It combines the ideas of cognitive therapy with meditative practices and attitudes based on the cultivation of mindfulness. The heart of this work lies in becoming acquainted with the modes of mind that often characterize mood disorders while simultaneously learning to develop a new relationship to them.
Experts characterise substance misuse as repeated use that you cannot stop that leads to impairments and negative consequences. Various factors play a role in causing it, including genetics and environmental variables. Addictive substances include cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin but can also include prescription medications and nicotine and alcohol. Being able to recognise the signs of misuse can help people know when to seek treatment.
Research-backed forms of therapy for treating OCD include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and a specific type of CBT called exposure and response prevention (ERP). In ERP, a person with OCD, initially guided by a therapist, is exposed to thoughts, things, or situations that produce anxiety or lead to obsessions and compulsions and, in doing so, learns to not engage in habitual compulsions.
